This I believe

This I Believe

Moving to the U.S. is difficult, but immigrating here illegally is another story. Illegal Immigrants from Mexico and many other countries in the world arrive in the U.S. looking for a fresh, new, and safe life. Who are we to deny them that? Just because they are not Americans, does not mean they should not have a chance to live out the “American Dream”.

My family and I came to the U.S. as refugees. We needed to escape the war in Kosovo, and America became our safe haven. We wanted to start a new life, and we did. We came here with almost nothing, but my parents worked and gave us a new life. The state of Wisconsin also helped us settle in and helped us financially until my parents had steady jobs.  Although we did not immigrate here illegally, we worked hard to get into this country and were lucky enough to be chosen to come here. Illegal Immigrants should have the right to stay in America if they risk leaving their whole lives behind for having a second chance. Most of the illegal immigrants do not want to hurt anyone, and the only jobs they are “stealing” from us are the ones that most people don’t even want. They just want to be safe and want to have a chance to be free and live out their dreams.

The U.S. should make a program or plan for Illegal immigrants. They don’t necessarily need to have all the rights as citizens but they should be able to work and live here. As an immigrant, I know how it feels like to be stuck in a country where it is not safe, and getting a chance to start over again was one of the greatest things that happened to our family.

I believe in letting illegal immigrants stay in America and giving them second chances. Everyone deserves a second chance if they work hard for it, and most of the illegal immigrants in this country had to work very hard for it. They should not have to hide; instead, we should welcome them.

  1. Great job, Enis. I'd certainly be interested in hearing or reading more about your experiences in Kosovo and the immigration over here, or your parents' stories if you were too young to remember. When did your family come to the US? The experience you've had sounds intense and has given you some insight into the world that many of us will never know. I'm sure you have much to say on this subject. Thanks for writing this. You are a writer.

  2. I really liked your topic Enis because I can relate to it completely because my parents and grandparents use to live in Tibet and when it was invaded, they had to run into Nepal and India and luckily, my dad was one of the few chosen to come to the U.S and then a few years later, we were able to come as well, so I can see exactly what you mean. I agree that immigrants should have a second chance because after all we are all human, but the only problem with that though is that then there may be too many. Maybe if there was a program for immigrants with an unstable country that are admitted into the U.S for only work but are able to become citizens after some amount of years if they have no criminal background. Nice essay.

  4. First thing I want to say is good job. Though this topic is a bit more complicated than how you have mentioned, I think that you made a lot of great points. Also, since you wrote from your own experience, you point is even more emphasized and your ideas become a bit more practical. Since you have so many ideas, are you going to try and pursue them? Great job Enis! =)

  8. this is really representative of a major issue in this country and you potray your argument very well ,especially since you took from your own experience. I like how you talk about everyone desearving a second chance and a better life and who are we to stop them. many american pride themselves on being american and getting such great oppritunities. So we should want others enjoy the luxury of having them too.
